Specialists-The ART ROOM
Instructor: Ms. Sharon
Welcome to the Art Room!
2011-2012

I'm glad to be here and
I'm definitely having fun.

Notice! - I'm having students help weave a strip of cloth that will be joined to make a Mobius Loop/Strip that represents the colors of flags around the world. What would make this special is finding some family history and from where families migrated. Brainstorming with the students we find out that most families are such a mix of other countries and cultures that this brings fun conversations. I have a couple sites that might interest your family - "Flags by Colours" and "All Star Flags" (a commercial site, but the info is fun)

Ultimately this weaving will be displayed in an art exhibit at the SHS December 7 - 14.  The title of the art exhibit is "Living for the Greater Common Good".  We've again brainstormed words that help us understand the title of the art exhibit.  I also have plans of co-op art to be displayed.  Please try to make time to enjoy district wide student art at the exhiblit.

Things you need to know -
This year (possibly the following years) I'm asking for $1 donation from each student toward art supplies.  This would greatly help with fundraising.  Thank you for any and all donations.
  • “The Book” Grab this book and do stuff - is on sale until sold out, $10.00 each.  Check it out – displays in front of the office and the Art Room.  “The Book” was designed by last years 6th grade and my self.  The idea is to go ‘out of the box’ and be creative using the ideas in the book.
  • Watercolor paintsI like to have students bring their own to class.  I teach how to take care of paints and properly use them.  Students only need the basic 8-color set.  Most sets can be used for several years.  If you can - purchase Crayola or Prang paints.  They have the most pigment for the money.

Art Projects Through the Year(s)
Doodling . . . yep, we'll doodle at school.
This year's theme for my classes will be doodling fun art pieces that will fill up walls and look different than most art we've done in the past.

Jan Brett Lesson - 1st grade - Chicks
Jan Brett, author-illustrator, has a wonderful website.  She gives us so many lessons, ideas and fun coloring papers to use.  This lesson we learned how to draw and paint a chick.  Then students drew the background of their choice. Check out Jan Brett's website

Third Grade Music Instrument
The third graders where given an instrument to draw - without drawing with pencil first.  Brave souls!  Then they pasteled the background and watercolored the instrument using fun colors.  But some became just a line drawing.

Students make at least one clay project per year and they glaze the piece too.  Sometimes we make an unglazed piece out of Mica Clay or combine with other mediums like weaving.
